Essay and Experimental Video, HD, endless loop
Multiple advertisements use Chinese characters – mostly together with cultural artefacts – as mere ornaments. In one scene of an Yves Saint Laurent commercial, the image, and thus the characters, were mirrored. I am reversing this act and by that, the brand's logo is mirrored.
The short experimental video "TNERUALTNIASSEVY" is part of an extended essay on Yves Saint Laurent's exotism, manifesting in his haute couture and perfume collection. The essay is weaving together the history of the colonial events known as the opium wars in China with Chinese individuals' responses to the perfume to analyse and contextualise orientalist commercials advertising YSL's perfume "Black Opium".
